I was scanning the latest economist on my desk and found an interesting parallel of handling crime in High Point, NC (The velvet glove) and the rebellion of militants in the Delta region of Nigeria (A chance to end the Delta rebellion). Ultimately, both articles deal with a form of handling lawlessness by offering amnesty to the criminals/militants as well as providing resources to these individuals to reintegrate into society in return for them ceasing their destructive activities. High Point has successfully executed the strategy. Hopefully, President Umaru Yar’Adua can manage this approach with equal success.
